Get to know Gran Canaria
More than 400,000 Norwegian travelers usually visit the Canary Islands during the year. Gran Canaria is by far the most popular island, and the sunny coast from Playa del Inglés to Puerto Mogán is the area where you hear most people speak Norwegian.
Gran Canaria offers far more than beach life. If you bring proper footwear and walk from, for example, Puerto Rico, you will see people of all ages exercising and hiking.
An hour's walk from Puerto Rico, a number of enthusiasts have arranged for a small lunch spot that has the pleasant name Norgesplassen. This is a very popular destination for many.
Puerto Rico is the winter dream for many northerners. In the past, it was charter tourism that dominated Puerto Rico. Now more and more people are here on long-term holidays from the cold and winter in the north. Puerto Rico has a large selection of accommodations. In the Puerto Rico Valley, shops and restaurants are plentiful. The new Mogan shopping center has got everything you may need, and if you are going to a grocery store, there is a large supermarket a few kilometers up the valley.
Las Palmas is the largest city in the Canary Islands and here you will find restaurants, bars and shopping opportunities on the assembly line. The city beach Las Canteras is versatile and suitable both for those who want wind - and maybe some salt water - in your hair, or those who are searching for a parasol, a good book and an umbrella drink. You can actually choose between swimming in calm water or hunt the big waves due to the natural coral reefs that keep the biggest waves at one end of the beach.
When the sun goes down you are always close to great food and drink, live music or clubs – if you want to keep it going all night long.
Swim in calm water or hunt the big waves at Las Canteras
Amadores is Gran Canaria's most photographed beach. The horseshoe-shaped beach within walking distance west of Puerto Rico is a real beach paradise. You can rent sunbeds and parasols here. Behind the sun there is a semicircle with shops and many restaurants. Amadores beach is also child friendly.
The Tauro Valley has many rental homes and here there is also a golf course. If you are going on a family holiday with children, the Tauro Valley is a good choice. Farthest east on the Tauro Beach there is a couple of beach bars of the very simple kind. Here we can recommend garlic gratinated king prawns.
Playa del Cura offers a quiet family holiday, with a bunch of quality hotels within walking distance to the beach.
The Taurito Valley a little further northwest has many all-inclusive hotels as well as a large water park that is included in the price of most hotels here (read hotel room conditions). This is an area that is especially popular with German families.
Farthest west you will find the popular small town of Puero Mogán, also called Gran Canarias Venezia. The port area of Puerto Mogán has many small houses in typical Canarian style. White painted sugar bit house with red, green, blue or yellow window frames. And of course lots of flowers everywhere. There is a ferry connection from Arguineguín to Puerto Mogán. This is a very nice trip to take if you want to see the south coast of Gran Canaria from the sea side.
